Diabetes is NOT caused by the sugar you eat? In all my years on this planet, and there have been several :), until recently, I have been told that diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar. “Stop eating all of that candy” adults would bark at me. “You will get diabetes if you keep eating sugar” the doctor would warn. Even when I found out a friend in school had diabetes I remember watching them as they ate and feeling bad for them not ever being able to eat candy again. What would they do on Halloween when the rest of the kids would haul pillowcases full of candy all the way home and trade their treasures with their friends? What a terrible thing to befell a kid. That was my tiny world view at the time.
Years later, in my 30s, I would get to know dozens of adults who would be diagnosed with diabetes – left to live a life tethered to their insulin needles and blood testing kits. Restricted diets, worries about the carbohydrates they were consuming, turning down fruit and other foods they were instructed to avoid, suffering from dozens of diabetes-related ailments. I was told it was genetic and that it ran in their families – it was something they had to live with. While genetics may play a role in increasing your risk of disease it is not the casual factor. I now know what causes diabetes. It is not sugar. It is not carbs. It is fat.

The money that supports Medicare is coming out of your paycheck. The money that is going to pay rocketing health care premiums is coming out of your paycheck. Why do you need to know this? Because only you can help to steady this tipping cart.
To understand how fat causes diabetes Dr. Neal Barnard , President of The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, states that “diabetes is not, nor has it ever been, caused by eating a high carb/sugar diet.” It is caused by fat (from the food you eat) getting into cells and blocking insulin from carrying in the glucose (sugar) to feed the cell. Carbs do not make you fat – our body needs carbs to create energy to fuel the body. Dr. Garth Davis, author of Proteinaholic, refers to a study involving 500,000 people that showed a direct inverse relationship between eating carbs and getting diabetes. The more fat you eat the more fat is stored in your cells. The more fat that is stored in your cells the less insulin that can get in creating insulin resistance. It is a vicious diabetic circle.
FACT: The biggest sources of fat are the meat and dairy products you consume. Not the bowl of pasta you are eating but rather the cheese you put on top. Not the potato but rather the butter, sour cream and cheese you dress it with.
FACT: I know you do not want to hear the fact I just cited above. It hits home doesn’t it? It threatens the very food you love to eat. You can still love food – just made a different way. I promise. Millions of people are finding out how, coming off of their insulin and living healthier and happier lives.
